Certamen is a quiz-bowl style game that tests teams of up to 4 players on classics-related topics such as Roman history, mythology, Latin literature, Latin grammar and vocabulary, Latin state mottoes and abbreviations, etc. Certamen is the Latin word for "contest" or "struggle" which is a fitting name given the extremely competitive nature of the game. Many states hold certamen tournaments between schools throughout the year, but the main test is at National Convention, where teams representing each state play each other for the chance to gain the glory and trophy that accompany winning first place. There are three levels of certamen: Novice for students in Latin 1 and below, Intermediate for students in Latin 2, and Upper/Advanced for students in Latin 3 and above.

If you're interested in being on the Georgia team next year, you might be interested in attending the certamen camps over the summer offered by The David Academy. The David Academy also offers summer camps to prepare students for the National Convention tests and throughout the school year offers lectures on various topics related to the classics.

2017-2018 Certamen Tournaments:

September 16, 2017, 8:45am-1:30pm: Walton High School

Check-in will begin at 8:45, and the tournament will end by 1:30.

There will be four levels:

Novice: this level is for true novice students – those who are in there first semester of Latin and have not played certamen in the past.

Novice advanced: this level is for those first year students who are in the second semester or year of a Latin program (e.g., 8th grade students whose school covers Latin I in 7th and 8th grade, or those who have taken an exploratory course in Latin and have attended a certamen tournament in the past).  We will also try to place teams from traditionally strong certamen programs in this level.

Intermediate: this level is for students in their second year of Latin

Advanced: this level is for students who are in their third year of Latin or higher
